In Defense of José Solís Jordán
On a Friday afternoon early in March 99, in a courtroom high up in the Dirksen Federal Building, José Solís Jordán and his numerous supporters eagerly awaited the return of a jury convened to hear the case of the U.S. Government vs. José Solís Jordán. Jordán, an independentista Puerto Rican educator on trial for crimes orchestrated and carried out by FBI agent provocateur Rafael Marrero, had steadfastly refused to collaborate with the government in its project of attacking the work of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Humboldt Park.
Some in the crowd were confident, some pessimistic about what justice might come the way of this man many see as a beacon of justice in the Puerto Rican community, in the human community.
The jury deliberated just a short time; waves of shock passed through the room as the foreman of the jury declared José guilty of conspiracy and three other charges.
